CFL Playoff Format Explained
Byes, hosting, the crossover rule and overtime, in plain words.
The CFL playoff format is short and unforgiving: six of nine teams qualify, every round is a single game and only two weeks separate the first Semi-Final from the Grey Cup. This page explains the seeding, the byes, the crossover rule and who hosts each game.
Who qualifies
Each division sends its top three teams. First place earns a bye straight to the Division Final and home field for it; second place hosts third in the Semi-Final. Standings are ordered on points (two per win, one per tie), then wins, head-to-head record, head-to-head net points, season net points and points scored.
The crossover rule
If the fourth-place team in one division finishes with more points than the third-place team in the other, it takes that third spot and plays its Semi-Final in the other division. A tie on points keeps the fourth-place team out; it must have strictly more. The crossover team can win the other division's final and reach the Grey Cup, so two West clubs could in theory meet for the title.

Playoff games cannot end in a tie. Overtime is played as alternating possessions from the opponent's 35-yard line, with a two-point convert required after a touchdown from the second possession onward, until one team leads after an equal number of possessions. The higher seed hosts every round before the Grey Cup; the Grey Cup venue is awarded to a host city years in advance, and the division champion with the better record is the designated home team.

Format questions
How many rounds are in the CFL playoffs?
Three: Division Semi-Finals, Division Finals and the Grey Cup. A top seed plays two games to win the title; a second or third seed plays three.
Does the first-place team always host?
Yes, the first-place team hosts the Division Final after its bye. The Grey Cup venue is fixed in advance, so the higher-ranked finalist is only the designated home team.
When was the crossover rule introduced?
It has been in the rulebook since 1997 and has been used many times, with West teams crossing to the East in most cases.
Has a crossover team ever won the Grey Cup?
No. Several have reached the Division Final, but none has won the East and gone on to lift the Grey Cup.
What is the Grey Cup?
The CFL championship trophy, first awarded in 1909. The game is Canada's biggest single-day sporting event and is held in a different city each year.
Knowing the CFL playoff format makes the race easier to follow: three rounds, six teams, byes for first place and a crossover rule that can reshape the East or West bracket.
