Famous Grey Cup Moments
The Grey Cup party is born (1948): Calgary fans brought chuckwagons and horses to Toronto and served pancake breakfasts. Legend says alderman Don Mackay rode his horse into the Royal York Hotel lobby. That week turned the game into Canada’s biggest annual party.
The trophy survives a fire (1947): A fire destroyed the Argonaut Rowing Club clubhouse in Toronto. Many trophies melted, but the Grey Cup survived by catching on a nail when its shelf collapsed.
The Mud Bowl (1950): Rain turned Varsity Stadium into a swamp. One player reportedly nearly drowned in a puddle as Toronto beat Winnipeg 13-0.
The Fog Bowl (1962): Thick fog stopped the game in Toronto with 9:29 left. Winnipeg finished off its 28-27 win over Hamilton the next day.
The Ice Bowl (1977): Montreal routed Edmonton 41-6 on frozen turf at Olympic Stadium in front of 68,205 fans.
The 13th man (2009): Montreal’s Damon Duval missed a last second field goal and Saskatchewan began to celebrate. A flag for too many men on the field gave him another try. He made the 33-yarder and Montreal won 28-27.
